Shape is Hiring

SHAPE is looking for volunteers and coordinators for the upcoming school year!!! SHAPE is a progressive and politically charged organization that seeks to empower youth in the greater Los Angeles area. We are looking for passionate, dedicated, and highly motivated individuals. No previous experience needed. All coordinator positions are paid and volunteer positions have the opportunity to receive stipends. If you are interested please fill out the attached application and return it to the SHAPE cubicle in SAC (Student Activities Center) 106. You can place it in Aaron Burleson's (Project Director) box. We are having rolling interviews, so please turn your application in as soon as possible.

May 25th at 12pm Carter-Huggins Dedication

A beautiful thing is planned... a Carter-Huggins plaque hanging ceremony in Campbell Hall. It is being done by a class of UCLA students Activism in the 60's , taught by Mary Corey, History Prof.

 

The ceremony will be on May 25th at 12 noon. ASU, let's be there as a family to support the dedication of our fallen brothers.

SHAPE 1st Annual Showcase

 

Greetings ASU Family!

This Spring quarter our very own SHAPE Program will be hosting its 1st
annual Showcase with singing, dancing, stepping, poetry and a fashion show.
We are reaching out to the community for support with volunteering and our
clothes drive donation for our students for the Fashion Show. We are
currently accepting volunteers for all positions and to help with our
students performance skills as well as the day-of activities. The Showcase
will be May 28, 2010 on the Hill with co-programming with ORL and the Field
Trip Component.

Where to Donate:

Donations will be accepted in the SHAPE cubicle until May 14, 2010 please
place them in a bag or box pre-washed for our students

It's our last event of the year, please come out and support!

ASU's Academic Support Program (ASP) is hiring

Hey Union, 
The Afrikan Student Union's retention project Academic Support Program is hiring for the 2010-2011 school year. 
First things first we would like you to know what is ASP? 

ASP 
What positions are we hiring for? 


Peer Counselor
Coordinators 
Administrative Assistant 

What kind of students are we looking for? 

ASP is program that reaches out to all kinds of Afrikan students so we need all types of students within the program so if you are: 
*involved with Harambee council orgs 
*a student who has had academic difficulty but been able to make and academic comeback 
*a student who understands the importance of office hours and study groups 
*a student who understand the importance of understanding policies and how they affect Afrikan community 
*someone who loves people and having conversations
* words like mentorship, internship or peer counseling get you pumped! 

If one or more of these bullet points describe you it means you should apply!! If you have friends that you think this describes encourage them to apply!! 
When are applications due? 
May 10th 2010 

So please make sure to turn them in....

Writing Success Program Scholarship


The Writing Success Program is honored to officially announce the Janet Brown Memorial Scholarship, which consists of three $1,000 non-renewable scholarship that will be awarded at the end of the 2009-2010 academic school year at the Community Programs Office Banquet .

Completed applications must be turned in to the mailbox of the Writing Success Program, which is located in the Student Retention Center Suite 105 in the Student Activities Center.  The deadline for the scholarship application is Wednesday May 19, 2010 at 5:00pm. Applications can be turned in any time prior to the deadline, but late applications will not be accepted.

Janet Brown was the founder and director of the Writing Success Program, a program that has been part of the Student Retention Center since 2002. Janet believed strongly in the mission of the Student Retention Center (SRC), particularly the importance of holistic student empowerment and student leadership, outcomes that the SRC is committed to. As stated on the SRC website, our projects are designed to assist undergraduate students with academic difficulties and cultural and social transitions. We recognize how vital it is to have students not only empower themselves, but to uplift their communities by doing so.

The Writing Success Program aims to complement the efforts of the other Student Retention Center projects by developing students' critical thinking through the writing process and empowering students in both their writing and thinking abilities - an empowerment that carries over to their community work. Many students and alumni credit the program, and Janet Brown in particular, as being both supportive and influential in helping them find their voices through writing and in pursuing their passions.

Before she passed away in April 2009, Janet was working on a novel that centered on the idea of the importance of preserving culture in their indigenous communities. As a result, in acknowledgement of the value of preserving culture, the Janet Brown Scholarship hopes to award students who are actively working to promote and preserve culture in their communities.

Additionally, due to the pressure of the economic crisis, it has been increasingly hard for students to continue their education while doing this community work. As such, in an effort to foster the retention of students, the Janet Brown Scholarship hopes to reward students in financial need who, despite these obstacles, have committed themselves to preserving the culture of their community.
